In March 2000, towards the end of the 1999-2000 academic school year, my husband and I began contemplating home-schooling our children. At the time, we were leaning towards waiting until the next school year. Early one Sunday morning, my husband woke me up and said “we must pull the kids out of school and begin to homeschool now”. I cautiously responded by pointing out that since it was so close to the end of the session, we should just wait and begin with the new academic year.
He responded with an excited, No, it’s time! We’ve got to do it now! Since he seemed so resolute, and we had been praying about it for a while, I gladly obliged. We wondered how the kids would respond to this sudden development. We called them together later that morning and told them about our plans. By implication, we were telling them that they would be pulled out of school immediately.
Their response was so unexpected: the three of them jumped up and started dancing and screaming for joy!!! We beheld the scene in amazement and knew right then that indeed God had indicated His blessing and approval on our decision. The next day, my husband took them to withdraw them from school. That Monday morning in March 2000 a new school was born.
The three Oyerinde children were the first and only students until 2005 when other students joined them. I remember the fateful day when our next-door neighbor knocked loudly on the front door. When I opened it, she stood with tears rolling down her cheeks and said “- Bola, could you teach my daughter too”-? As this came as a shock to me, I responded,- “This really isn’t a job for me-, I’m sacrificing to do this for my children , nothing more-”.
She replied “Oh! I’ll pay you! Please!!!” To get her to leave it alone at that moment, I said I would discuss it with my husband and get back to her. We eventually decided to help this mom out by allowing her daughter to join us. By the next school year, the word of our small new school’s success had gotten around, and a few more families joined us. Our homeschool officially became organized into a formal school called-“Kingdom Kids Academy”.
In subsequent years, academic enrollment grew steadily, and the doors of Kingdom Kids remained opened until August 2010. We decided that the school would be relocated to Nigeria as a result of our decision to return to Nigeria in 2011. After the move, we changed the name of the school to Oyerinde Preparatory School (OPS) to reflect the name of the founding family because of our commitment to make it an institution of excellence in every way.
To God alone be all the glory for how far He has led us.
